Abbas Kowsari

Abbas Kowsari (B. 1970, Tehran) is a photographer known for his diverse approach in capturing the complexities of Iranian life. Growing up in the 70’s, Kowsari was profoundly influenced by his religious background and the political vibe of the Islamic Revolution and consequent Iran-Iraq War. He started taking photography classes while still in high school, leading to his career in photojournalism since 1994. The constant clash between left-wing reformist newspapers and conservative authorities created an unstable atmosphere within the field yet despite all the challenges, Kowsari remained committed to his work and is currently the Photo Editor-in-Chief for Shargh Newspaper and Aftabnet Magazine.

Heavily influenced by his close friendship and collaboration with the late Sadegh Tirafkan, Kowsari began to explore documentary photography from an artistic perspective. His body of work delves into a range of compelling topics, including gender, identity, religion, politics, and the environment. With his keen eye for detail, Kowsari skillfully captures the rituals of modern-day Iranians, revealing how they navigate the complexities of adapting to a rapidly changing world. His photographs possess a depth that exposes the layers and nuances of Iranian culture with both candor and whimsy. By deliberately selecting individuals who embody the essence of humanity, Kowsari effortlessly immerses them in timeless landscapes, evoking a sense of mystique that transcends language and imparts profound wisdom.

Kowsari has participated in various exhibitions around the world and his works have also been featured in local and international Biennales and festivals such as Photolux (2019), Les Rencontres d’Arles (2017), Ballarat International Foto Biennale (2017), Bredaphoto (2010). He has received numerous awards and recognition for his photography; chosen as a finalist for the Prix Pictet and Magic Of Persia Contemporary Art Prize in 2009 and jury for the World Press Photo Contest – Asia Category in 2021. His works have also been displayed in galleries and museums worldwide and are included in notable public and private art collections.

Kowsari’s work has been recognized and featured in books, magazines, catalogues, and academic dissertations. In addition to his successful career in photojournalism and art photography, Kowsari has also held positions as a still photographer for various documentaries and film productions, collaborating with esteemed directors and actors within the Iranian cinema industry.
